Different jobs, not rival products: hydrocolloid absorbs fluid from an open or weeping spot; microdart patches use tiny, shallow dissolving cones aimed at closed, early bumps.
Price per patch varies a lot: hydrocolloid runs roughly 15–40p a patch, while microdart patches are typically £0.60–£2.50+ each — check the retailer, as these move.
Neither replaces a GP: for deep, painful, or recurring cystic spots, patches are cosmetic support at best — see a GP for anything persistent.
What each format actually is
Hydrocolloid patches are a thin, sticky dressing — the same material used on wound care — that absorbs fluid and keeps a spot covered while it heals. They work best on something that's already open, weeping, or come to a head as a whitehead.
Microdart (microneedle/microcone) patches are a fine grid of tiny, dissolving cones, usually made from a hydrocolloid-adjacent polymer, moulded onto a patch backing. The cones are tiny and shallow — brand states they're designed to sit on a closed, early-stage bump rather than an open spot. They are not clinic-grade microneedling, and they are not injections — they're a self-apply, at-home spot patch.

When not to buy microdarts
Skip microdarts if: the spot is already a whitehead, weeping, or has fluid at the surface — a hydrocolloid patch will do that job better. And if a spot is deep, painful, cystic, or keeps recurring in the same place, a patch of either kind won't replace proper care — see a GP.
The hybrid muddle: Revolution Super Dart
Revolution Skin's Super Dart is genuinely both: a microneedle dart array moulded onto a hydrocolloid base layer.
